What is Atomic Design?
Nowadays the number of web designers is increasing in an accelerated way and all of them have various tactics how create digital design. Every designer has the chosen strategy that is absolutely different from the other designer’s one, because we are all individuals with distinct preferences. But most commonly web designers are using two contrasting strategies:
- 1. The top to down method, when designer is starting with core elements and then gradually finishing their product by working on some little details. This strategy is most frequently employed and distributes very good results.
- 2. The bottom to top method, when designer starts with simple things and gradually moves to the basic and the most important part of the work. This method is also known as an atomic web design. Many people question the presented method, are against of it but still it has a lot of advantages that inspire web designers to use the given strategy.
Someone might ask why it is called atomic design when it is just bottom to top method but the answer is simple because it is influenced by the chemistry. Atoms are the simplest particles which cannot be broken down anymore but combining two atoms you are left with molecules which are more functional than atoms. And by combining molecules you end up with complex creatures – organisms. Atomic web designing has the same principle, you start with the simplest things and gradually create website. The benefits of atomic design
- • When designer knows every single element (atom) of the system, then it is easier to break it down and maybe reuse different parts (atoms) and mix those to create more complex website.
- • With atomic web designing it is always easier to code because the interface is more intuitive. Atomic design decreases the probability of writing the duplicate code because you are using various “atoms” to build the initial layout and it is easy to see where you are using various elements of website.
- • When one already has the list of atoms it is way easier to create pages or even prototypes. All he or she needs to do is to mix up those elements and then customize based on some specific preferences for the ultimate website.
- • Atomic design is also great for quick and frequent updates or maybe for some elimination of specific design elements. When web designer is changing one part at a time, he is certain that change will occur throughout the whole interface.
There are many other more advantages of atomic design but the most important one is that it gives ability to a web designer to understand the core principles of the design like its quality, organization and composition. Developers may work from bottom to down, by creating at first the basic concepts and then dealing with simple details but when it comes to designing simple things weigh more and need more attention. This process is methodical and needs a lot of “step-by-step” work but if you are going to work on some new project try out this method. You will be left with high quality product and with higher customer satisfaction.
